I’ve been teaching for Davines Hair care for the last several years.  The last few I’ve been on the Visionary Team. I just did a sales presentation for a lot of the distributors with my partner in Davines crimes Naomi. We did a few models with the help of Erin Green who did some Lovely makeup! I’ll show you the before & after.  For those of you who do hair, isn’t this one of the most fun parts of our jobs! I did some cutting & styling & Naomi Knights did the beautiful colour you’ll see!

Wow!!!  What a shoot!  I just got a wonderful opportunity to do a photoshoot with the Museum of Modern Art here in Nyc!  In this subway station we did a photoshoot & a piece of performance art all at the same time!  There is an artist who uses the ads in the subway as his own art work.  He changes each & any of the vinyl subway posters around he wants to. This was so inspiring! Live art, photography, fashion, hair, makeup!  Honestly even shooting late in the subway was so amazing, the energy of  Saturday night, subway station creativity unleashed! Make sure to look out for the shots that night on my website soon!  Check out the out takes & video!  Enjoy!

Hey Nicole! Thanks for the email!  First, just to see a technique on how this style is done. I’d ask you to look for an old lady salon & ask for a wash & set. Find an image that you like from my website or another & they should be able to replicate it. Next, read through this description well to see what tools & products you need or already have.  You definitely want to try this once or more to see what makes sense & looks right.  Products you’ll need is a dry hairspray, wet/non aerosol-pump hairspray, gel, maybe a shine spray too. Be very careful with all the application of the product. It’s always better to add more as you need because once it’s in, you can’t take it off (especially with the shine spray!!)!  Do you have some bangs, layers in your haircut & does it frame your face? If so, great! Are you comfortable using a curling iron? I would first blow dry your hair so that it’s neat around the face, has some volume & not on your natural part. Use a vent brush or a 9 row denman brush for that (if you go to a beauty supply store they should know what you’re talking about, also google them so you know what it looks like when you buy them). Next, probably use about a 1″ curling iron taking almost 1″ sections deep and wide enough so that the hair is about an inch in from the end of the iron. Spray each section with the wet/non aerosol-pump hair spray curl the center sections back to the last section of the nape. Now, this is very important. When you roll the hair on the iron, take each section as forward as it can go, catch the end of the section & then roll it back. This is called being “on base” which means that the iron when you finish rolling the section should end on the part. When the hair is heating up touch the top of the section & wait til you can feel the heat penetrate. Then take the iron out, make sure that it’s rolled up again like it was when it was in the iron & then using either roller pins or a duck bill clip slide the clip along the base of the section to let it cool. Letting all the hair cool is one of the most important things that will make the hair stay. Repeat this all over the head. This is the part where your creativity will need to come in. Find a pic that you want to copy so you have a reference. Now, let the clips out of the back (everything behind the ear & beneath the crown) take a finer than thicker comb or brush & comb the hair down to just above your shoulders, the ends should still be curled, spread your fingers very wide & rake them through the ends to combine the sections. Now let down the sides under the temple (you should still have the top of the mohawk section pinned up) brush one side back & one side down & make sure each side connects with the back. When you brush each side use the back as a point to aim for the curls to match. Don’t brush too hard. You should start to see the shape emerge. You might need to tease the hair a little to combine sections or to adjust the volume. If you need to adjust the volume use a comb that the teeth are further apart than the first one you used. Pick up 2 or 3 of the sections & lift them straight out to the side of where they grow & starting at midway through the length insert the comb & push it toward the root slowly & evenly (if it’s too slippery use a bit of the dry spray) try this once or twice to see the effect. If you need to combine the sections, (use the same comb as above) do this by lifting the hair slightly & gently push on top & below the sections until they’re combined.  Once everything looks right, let the rest of the hair down. If you split the top section down your natural part line you should see the front fall into a wave. Think of the shape of the letter “S” when you think of the front outline. Be very careful around this area.  Now match the front with the picture you found.  When everything is how you like it you can use a little bit of gel by spreading it all over your hand that will lightly smooth the fly aways & strengthen the outline. Use it sparingly! If you need to, you can use the shine spray again sparingly all over & then use a good coat of the dry spray. I think this is pretty thorough. If you have any questions please feel free to email me back. If you could, I would Love to see before & after pictures! Thanks Again & Gooooood Luck!
Carpe Diem,
Damian

A Letter about the hairstyle of Miss Dita Von Teese

So, here’s a letter (email) I just received from Nicole Fuoco about styling her hair for an upcoming event!

Subject: I read your article on Dita

And I was wondering…if you could give me some advice.

I have super thick, just past the shoulder length hair. I have tried everything when it comes to curling it, yet it never holds.

I have also tried to curl it in foam rollers and sleep in it. I wait until the hair is just barely damp, and curl it onto the foam curlers. However, when I wake up in the morning, I only find that the hair has not dried at all.

Please help me out!! I have a banquet to go to this saturday, and I need to took perfect in “Vintage Hollywood Glam”

Thanks for any advice
Niki
